When Jesus calmed the storm He revealed a lack of trust in His disciples that we might find
surprising. You see unlike us, they did not doubt that the Lord was with them. Rather they did
not rest in the security of what His presence meant. There is an old song which has the words:
'With Christ in the vessel I'll smile at the storm.' Well they had Christ in the vessel and they
were not smiling. This got me thinking. Is our problem that we forget Jesus is with us? Maybe
it is sometimes but perhaps we forget more often that the one who is with us is fully able to
deal with every circumstance. Is our problem to do with finance, relationships, temptation,
illness etc? The one who has promised never to leave us or forsake us is not just any old
companion. He is Jesus - the Lord! It is not the intensity of our trust that matters so much as
Our grasp of who it is that we trust. He is able.
