| 2010 brought ice and snow here and calamity in Haiti. When we see personal tragedy on such a huge scale we would have to be very callous not to be moved with sorrow and compassion. Yet every day all over the world there are many small scale personal tragedies. People are suddenly bereaved, much loved children end up in prison, terminal illness is diagnosed or perhaps employment is lost and hope seems to go with it. In the middle of all this to ask where God is, is a fair question. This fallen world has functioned out of sync ever since sin first entered. The whole creation is tainted and all humankind shares the common lot of living with the inevitable consequences. There is much about such times I cannot understand. However, when I look at Jesus I see a God who has entered this unfair world of pain and sorrow. He has shared our lot. He has even experienced horrific death. Where is God in tragedy? Right there in the middle, sharing our grief and our tears and pointing, thanks to Jesus, to another Kingdom and a day when all such sadness will be gone. Meanwhile He invites us to work for that Kingdom now. He invites us to try to bring something of beauty right into the middle of ugliness. He invites us to choose faith, hope and love even in the darkest place for faith, hope and love are the things that will last into eternity. Stuart Woodward |
